Toll charges for Hwy. 407 will change next month Tuesday January 6 2009

The company that operates Highway 407 has announced toll charges will change starting next month.

As of Feb. 1, 407 Express Toll Route (ETR) peak-hour tolls for light vehicles between Highway 403 and the QEW in Burlington and Highway 400 will be 19.85 cents per kilometre.

Road in Pickering will be 19.25 cents per kilometre.

The off-peak toll rate for the entire highway is being held at 2008 levels.

Transponder customers will receive a reduction in their monthly transponder lease fee.

The company also announced that it will introduce a trip toll charge of 25 cents for light vehicles for each trip taken on the highway.

More drinking and driving charges laid this holiday Tuesday January 6 2009

More drinking drivers were ferreted out by Holiday RIDE spot checks on Brampton and Mississauga roads this year compared to last, statistics show.

Peel police stopped 35 per cent fewer vehicles, but charged 39 per cent more drivers with the crime of drinking and driving.

During the 35-day campaign, 29,456 drivers were checked in Brampton and Mississauga, and 132 were charged. That is up from the 2007 campaign when 45,300 drivers were checked and 95 charged.

Another 217 escaped charges this season, but had their licences taken away from them on the spot for 12 hours for having just below the legal limit of alcohol in their systems (more than .05 per cent but less than .08 per cent blood alcohol concentration).

In all, Peel police say they found one driver who had been drinking (more than .05 per cent BAC) for every 223 drivers...
