Teen’s trip to the mall turns into life-changing event

Monika Kuligowska, 15, was shopping with friends at Bramalea City Centre when talent scouts from Miss Canada Globe Productions approached her.
 
BRAMPTON - A regular trip to the mall turned into a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 15-year-old Monika Kuligowska.
The Brampton teen was shopping with friends at the Bramalea City Centre when talent scouts from Miss Canada Globe Productions approached her. After a question and answer session with a panel of judges, Kuligowska was selected as Miss Teen Brampton Globe 2008.
“I was really nervous and excited. I had never done anything like it before,” said Kuligowska.
Although new to the pageant scene, Kuligowska has spent time modeling for Toronto’s Eleanor Fulcher agency.  
Getting over the initial shock of the win she is now gearing up to represent Brampton in this summer’s Miss Teen Canada competition in Toronto this August.
According to Kuligowska, 30 delegates from across the country will participate in a weeklong series of activities going crown-to-crown to see who takes over the prestigious beauty queen title. “I’m sure it can get competitive and I know a lot of people will think the claws will come out, but I think we’ll all become really close like sisters.”
Kuligowska has been preparing for the competition with weeks of pageant training. “They teach us how to walk, how to get sponsorship and they help us prepare our platform statement.”
The contestants must compete in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and talent. Kuligowska realizes some may view girls her age as being too young to compete in beauty pageants but assures it is based on more than just appearance. “Showcasing things such as swimwear and evening wear shows that I have grace and poise. Winning a pageant such as this one proves that you are a very good role model for young Canadian women — a symbol of true beauty.”
Charity work is a strong component in preliminary judging says Kuligowska. She hopes to volunteer for Victim Services of Peel and help raise money for abused children.
