Mark McKintosh, 21, of Brampton has been charged, but is still in hospital in serious condition. He is expected to be discharged this week, and if he is, he will make his first court appearance Friday. If not, the case will be remanded to another date, according to Peel police. He remains under guard and in custody in hospital.
Police say words were exchanged between two men in a plaza parking lot in the area of Peter Robertson Boulevard and Torbram Road just after 9 p.m. Saturday. Both men were armed with knives, and both were stabbed, investigators said. They did not know each other, according to police.
Daniel Grandison, 20, was rushed to hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he died of his injuries. Police said the killing is not gang related.
Grandison's sudden, violent death has resonated loudly through dozens of young people, many high school and grade school friends. They created a Facebook tribute page in his memory, expressing disbelief at his death.
One friend's post summed up much of what the others expressed-- "(I'm) shocked, stunned and hurt."
Grandison was remembered on the site by more than 50 friends from several high schools in Brampton, universities, and one from Winnipeg, another from New York. They remembered him as a character, someone who was always full of joy-- a joker with a contagious smile. One friend noted Grandison "stood up for what he believed in."
Some referred to his nicknames-- Jelly, Briefs and Breezy-- and others lamented the fact they had not seen or spoken to him for some time, and they will never be able to speak to him again.
A couple of the posts expressed frustration at the prevalence of violence in society.
The "violence NEEDS to stop!!!!" one friend wrote. "A lifetime taken in one minute. Too precious to be taken so lightly. Young men need to get their priorities straight ...This is too deep."
Another wrote, "Through this tragic event, I hope people can open their eyes to how corrupt the world can be, and because of this I hope that people realize that the violence needs to stop. I've lost many brothers in the past, but as people we continue to lose more, and more early."
Bramptonian Nelia Revoredo-Dibiase wrote to his friends on the site, telling them she was one of three women who were with Grandison as he lay on the street bleeding.
"I was with Daniel right after he got stabbed... Please know and take some comfort in knowing that Daniel was not left there on the street to die like an animal," she told them.
"I held Daniel's head in my lap while the other lady held his hand. The third lady went to get a blanket, her child's yellow blanket, to keep him warm."
She said the three women were urging him to "hang on."
She was coming home from the movies with her husband and children and came across him laying on the median at Torbram and Peter Robertson, she said.
She said the three Good Samaritans cared for Grandison in those few moments "like he was our very own child" and told his friends that she, too, is grieving his death.
This is Brampton's third murder of the year. There were six murders in Brampton in 2007.
