Chrysler considering four-day work week for Brampton facility
Thursday August 14 2008
By PETER CRISCIONE
A four day work week may be in the cards for Chrysler's Brampton Assembly Plant as the company strives to reduce hydro costs.

Earlier this week, the United Auto Workers (UAW) reported Chrysler was set to ask the union to buy into a plan that would see four-day work weeks- four shifts of 10 hours each- implemented at 12 U.S. manufacturing plants.

The move is necessary in order to cut energy consumption which is a major input cost for manufacturers, company officials said.

To approve the change, Chrysler is talking with the international UAW and the union locals representing the plants impacted.

Ed Saenz, spokesman for Chrysler, said the company is also looking at the possibility of implementing the changes at its Brampton facility.

"The (Brampton) plant is not on our initial list. But it is under consideration and review," Saenz told The Guardian.

However, he noted Chrysler would implement changes at its U.S. operations before taking action in Canada.

He said five American assembly plants have been singled out as being best suited for this course of action.

"The best candidates are plants with the lowest overtime," Saenz continued.

Chrysler's Windsor Assembly will likely stay a five-day per week operation.

Chrysler has not yet revealed how much the company would save by adopting a four day work week.
