BRAMPTON -
With two games remaining in the regular season the Mayfield Mavericks are hoping to solidify their position in the Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) Tier 1 senior boys’ rugby division. The Mavericks suffered their first loss of the season last Thursday as they fell 33-8 to the, at that time, unbeaten Lorne Park Spartans at Mayfield. Following that game, Mayfield still had two games remaining in the schedule and their final spot in the standings was still undetermined. Their games included yesterday (following The Guardian’s deadline) against unbeaten Streetsville Tigers and on Tuesday with Erindale Raiders, who currently sit in fourth. The Tigers were still unbeaten following their game on Tuesday, when they handed Lorne Park its first loss 8-0. Mayfield coach Jonathan Beggs hopes his team, with a number of Grade 10 and 11 players, learned from its loss to the Spartans, that they still have some work to do to be at the top of ROPSSAA. “We lose our concentration and a team as good as Lorne Park will take advantage of that,’’ he said. “This is definitely a wake-up call.’’ Four of the seven teams in the Tier 1 loop make the playoffs with the top two hosting semifinal games next Friday. Mayfield was 3-1 heading into its contest with Streetsville. Erindale in fourth was 2-2 while Bramalea Broncos and Brampton Centennial Bucks with 1-4 marks were tied for fifth. Against Lorne Park the Mavericks came out strong in the first half and had territorial advantage over the first few minutes. Despite driving deep into Spartans territory they were only able to come away with a penalty kick from Spencer Naida to go up 3-0. After that the Spartans took over the game, going up 19-3 at the half. In the second half the Mavericks got a try by Matt Burnie but that was the only scoring they could manage. The Spartans were led by speedster Nick Smith who ran in two trys and booted four converts. Mark Kovacevic also had two trys with the other by Anton Nikouline. Beggs said the Mavericks have been led this season by the play of Naida, Kelsey Krushel and Dylan Monteith. The Mayfield junior boys remained in first and on top of the standings as they won their fourth consecutive game 44-14 over the 1-2 Chinguacousy Chiefs. Brennan McCartney had two trys and a convert while Mack Footman also collected two trys for the Mavs. Peter Anselmi, Anthony Jones, Blake Smith and Tyler Thompson also had trys. Luke Koolman added a convert. The Chiefs got single trys by Tyrone Forrest and Mike Swiatczak with Adam Anthony kicking a pair of converts.
