BRAMPTON - The Brooklin Redmen thought they were back in their Eastern Canadian lacrosse semifinal with the Brampton Excelsiors on Wednesday night.
Leading game three by two goals with less than three minutes remaining, the Redmen looked on the way to their first win of the series. But a stunning turn of events may have put the dagger into Brooklin’s season. The Excelsiors scored three goals in the final 2:16, including the game-winner with just two seconds remaining to claim a 9-8 victory and take a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Brampton could finish off a series sweep with game four scheduled for tonight in Brooklin.
The Excelsiors’ big guns Colin Doyle, Dan Dawson, Blaine Manning and Josh Sanderson took over the game in the final minutes. Manning scored goals with 2:16 and 1:27 remaining with Dawson and Doyle getting the assists on both.
Doyle picked up the winner with two seconds remaining, Dawson and Sanderson assisted on that.
Doyle finished with a seven-point night, three goals and four assists. Dawson wound up with a goal and five assists, Sanderson a goal and two assists and Manning with three goals.
Patrick Merrill also scored a third-period goal for the Excelsiors who scored five times over the final 20 minutes with Doyle and Manning each scoring twice in that span.
Sandy Chapman, Dan Teat, Phil Sanderson, Mike Kirk and Ryan Campbell had Brampton assists.
The Redmen were led by Jason Mainer with two goals and three assists. Derek Hopcroft had a goal and three assists, Steve Hutchins three goals, Shawn Williams two assists, Scott Campbell a single goal with additional assists by Steve Hoar, Kyle O’Brien, Scott Gamble and Matt Carroll.
Anthony Cosmo was in goal and earned the victory for the Excelsiors, while Brooklin went with Mike Miron.
Should Brooklin win tonight then a fifth game will be back in Brampton on Monday at 8 p.m. at the Powerade Centre. Game six is scheduled for Brooklin on Tuesday with a seventh game on Thursday in Brampton at 8 p.m.
In the other semifinal, Peterborough led St. Regis 2-0 with the teams scheduled to play last night in Peterborough (following The Guardian’s deadline).
